How a Healthy Bytes Client Improved Access to Private Practice Nutrition Counseling
Today we’re sharing one of our own client’s stories with you! As a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified specialist in sports dietetics, certified eating disorders registered dietitian, and family nurse practitioner with 20 years of experience, Robyn Kievit Kirkman supports her clients in the areas of eating disorders, weight management, sports nutrition and wellness goals. Robyn has been a Healthy Bytes client since December of 2015 and today we're highlighting how she’s grown her practice with us and improved her clients’ access to her amazing care.
Congrats, Robyn, on your success!
Robyn knew at the early age of 16 that nutrition would be her chosen career path- even in high school, she held jobs as a diet technician and a diet aide. She earned her bachelors in Dietetics from the University of Connecticut and is credentialed as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Robyn’s first client walked through the door the summer she became a registered dietitian. She operated her solo private practices part-time in Boston and Concord, MA; eventually growing her business to a full-time venture in 2011 following the pursuit of her nurse practitioner credentials. She currently provides counseling to approximately 80 clients on a regular basis.
Expanding Client Reach by Accepting Multiple Forms of Insurance
For years, Robyn only accepted Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. She found the insurance credentialing process a bit overwhelming (she’s not alone!) and was hesitant to undergo it with additional companies. She knew that accepting other forms of insurance from clients, however, would broaden her client base.
That’s when she received an email from us, Healthy Bytes, announcing that we’d be at the 2015 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Food and Nutrition Conference and Exposition. Robyn sought us out at the show; her urgency in signing on other insurance carriers was the deciding factor to use our services. And Healthy Bytes has indeed allowed Robyn to broaden her client base. She has grown her claims revenue by 270% in a mere six months’ time.
“Taking additional forms of insurance provides me with more flexibility,” she shared. “I refer fewer clients to colleagues who take additional insurances.”
We helped Robyn contract with Aetna, UnitedHealth, and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. This labor-intensive process can take upwards of 20 hours per company; we handled this process for her so she could focus on her clients.
“Tremendous” Time Savings
Robyn now partners with Healthy Bytes for insurance reimbursement assistance. Seventy percent of her clients pay via their insurance. We manage client eligibility checks, file claims and appeal denied claims when necessary. Robyn’s assistant connects with us as needed, approximately one to two times weekly.
“The amount of time that the Healthy Bytes platform saves my team on a daily basis is tremendous,” Robyn notes. “I would not be able to see as many patients as I currently do if I had to deal with the back-end paperwork and billing. I have too much going on to call my insurance providers directly.”
Growing with the Help of Healthy Bytes
Robyn sees between 10-12 clients per day. She juggles her private practice with her own growing family, plus her per diem employment as a nurse practitioner at Walden Behavioral Care. Robyn is busy, busy, busy –thus Healthy Bytes is currently assisting Robyn with Cigna and Tufts Health Plan insurance contracting to further increase her patient reach and help her achieve her private practice goals.
