We are mixing things up on the blog this week in honor of taxes being due April 18th. Instead of our usual format, we will be hearing from Healthy Bytes' very own Jeanne Koeing all week! Stay tuned for her advice on how to file your taxes, reasons for bookkeeping, her favorite tools to keep track of business transactions, and more.
Today she will be kicking the week off with what forms you should be filling out and where you need to file them.
April 18th is Tax Filing Day Deadline!
If that header just gave you a mild panic attack – Please take a deep breath and keep reading – turns out April 18th is also the deadline to file both your federal and state tax extensions - there is no shame in giving yourself until October to get all those proverbial ducks in a row and avoiding late fees.
E-file your federal extension for both your personal and business taxes at https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Extension-of-Time-To-File-Your-Tax-Return you can also complete Form 4868 for individuals and Form 7004 for business online and mail it in but they must be postmarked 4/18/16.
You will also need to file an extension with the State but keep in mind that State tax extensions guidelines vary greatly and every State uses a different form. A quick google search with this formula should get you what you need: “state name” followed by the words “state tax extension” or https://www.irs.com/articles/state-tax-extension-information
One final note keep copies of all these forms somewhere safe and when in doubt please seek help from a professional accountant or tax advisor.
