As the role of dietitians and nutritionists expands in healthcare and the recognition of medical nutrition therapy grows, so does the risk of malpractice and negligence claims.
Professional Liability Insurance, like your License and NPI is just one of those things you must have before you even begin to see patients.
Professional Liability Insurance, sometimes referred to as Malpractice Insurance, protects dietitians and nutritionists from real or alleged errors or omissions, including negligence in the course of your professional duties, by covering most of the costs associated with these claims. The liability insurance policy will often:
- provide a lawyer,
- pay all reasonable costs incurred in the defense or investigation of a covered claim,
- pay lost wages,
- provide reimbursement if licensing board issues are involved.
Also if you want to set up a CAQH or contract with health insurance companies, you'll have to show proof of professional liability insurance. In other words, liability insurance is obligatory.
