March 8th is International Women’s Day, and the 2019 theme is #BalanceforBetter.
As the women’s day website states,
A balanced world is a better world. How can you help forge a more gender-balanced world? Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.
International Women’s Day got its start back at the turn of the last century. The first Women’s Day was celebrated globally in 1911, as women around the world began organizing and demanding for better working conditions, voting rights, and more equal pay. As we all know, the work continues today!
International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual opportunity for us to collectively reflect on the strides that women have made towards equality, and to get re-energized to advocate for continued improvements. As IWD research notes, gender parity isn’t just a women’s issue — it’s an economic issue.
We at Healthy Bytes are, of course, especially interested in seeing how gender equity is playing out and how #BalanceforBetter can be implemented across the healthcare sector. Harvard’s School of Public Health points out that the industry employs a majority of women, yet women are a tiny percentage of healthcare executives. Maybe becoming CEO of a health system isn’t a lifelong goal of yours, but increasing the gender diversity in healthcare leadership roles and, more fundamentally, increasing women’s sense of belonging in these spheres, will serve as a rising tide that lifts all ships. The trickle down effect will be felt all the way down to the many private practice RDNs that are also female business owners!
How do you strive to run your practice in a way that celebrates women’s achievements and realizes #BalanceforBetter for your business, for your colleagues and fellow RDNs, and for your clients?
